ceci n’est pas la lune.

dear all –

some time back (like february of last year) you may remember Kyle and I were working on music for his sister’s senior theatre/dance thesis. well since i’m continually out of phase with such things i… was, uh, out of phase with it. and so i only just found out about the footage of the completed piece being available at googlevideos.

i had to wait one night to post this because, believe it or not, i hadn’t ever seen the finished production. the weekend of the event i think i had to play a gig in like Waubashau, NY or something… so i missed it. but wow. its very hip to see it all come together as it does here.

in the end Kyle and I were working from a rehearsal tape with Emma (Jaster) sort of running through bits of the piece and talking through the bits that weren’t yet certain/choreographed/blocked.

i don’t recall there being any props in the video we saw. it was all imaginary. and i also had no clue what the title meant (its apparently in a different language) but so: without any more nonsense from me. the video. the piece.

snowy day at home

Hey folks,

well the sudden and unexpected snowiness prevented me from getting to kyle’s in time to do our Saje hit. still i made it over in good enough time for us to futz around with the music software and pull out the old keyboards and things.

what will come of this? who can say…

(…though that who might be wise to mention, first, that we are once again making music — in an apartment.)

(akie)

ah… the keeping

its wednesday, finally! and some things keep going well and something just keep going. i’m gonna keep it brief because there is much to be done today. so…. how about something unexpected?

acoustic, even?

Mimetiks on Vacation

hey all!

yeah we’re taking a break from gigging for a couple of weeks to get our heads together. and get our plans set for the winter. some of us (the fat one) have to get ready to hibernate, others have to insulate their french doors, or baby-oil massage their drum heads. we need to do some writing. and some recording. and other things as well. so the beginning of novemeber will be a Mimetiks-less zone. we will NOT be at Saje on for at least the first two Sundays of the month. and probably not at Brooklyn Exposure, either.

have no fear, dear listeners, i will keep you a breast of the situation. and stop by with timely quotations and music-gifts. all free as usual. free and clear and under control.

peace,
akie (the fat one)

we hate myspace.

a lot. but, since we’ve opted to succumb…this should be linked to from our blog. thanks to some guy named rod

Sunday Show Canceled

Sorry All Who Are Concerned. This coming sunday (the 29th of July) the Mimetiks will not be playing at Saje. We will be in Vermont as a good friend of ours gets married and then rushing back to the city for private evening party in the city. So — those of you in need of the live fix - we’ll be back at it next Sunday (the 5th of August) with old tunes, new tunes, and the same ole’ gusto.

to hold you over… here’s a little something we borrowed from Miles Davis.

Tuesdays in September

Hey All,

Looks like our Tuesdays at Saje will be canceled until the beginning of September. Apologies, but it would seem Tuesday Night wasn’t as bangingin’ (yes : bangingin’) as it could be and we don’t want to put unnecessary strain on the good people over at Saje.

Never fear, however, for a lack of live music. there are still hip things happening over at Saje and we’ve still got a month of Sundays coming up for you. it will only mean that we put that much more energy into our Sunday afternoon sets.

Hope the Summer is otherwise bangingin’ for every body.

see you sundays,
Akie

he said there would be a flood.

Ok. its been a minute. and the last post was something of hurried throw-ing-up (a vomiting, if you will) of music. but today’s an extraordinary day. to day is a day when the forces of several elements were thrown together in precisely the right way. when all the wheels of music were grinding easily together. what was achieved, therefore, was a blasting-effect. and explosion, a projectilic out-pouring. of new music, and new songs. and new sounds. and outrageous cohesion.

the keeper

here’s a tune that sprung forth from my mind like the grey-eyed goddess of wisdom from her father’s “splitting” head-ache. wednesday afternoon, as i was (supposedly) practicing for a different gig, this tune simply turned my head. maybe it was the night preceding or the coffee-dregs infusing the room with quite, darkening, energy. but i pressed record. made the crap demo mp3. and sent it immediately off to kyle and luke. calling it: the keepers. one alteration: no “s.” hope you dig this summer-song. and let us sing often.

i have no clue

and this is from tuesday night’s craziness. on the spur of the moment we decided to take this little progression and make it a song. and so it became. luke sat on it… and the rest is like water: all flow.

flood

also from tuesday. we started the whole night off with this groove. i may have gotten the syncopation from John Coltrane’s Body and Soul of Coltrane Sound. in the trio format the tune goes from being the poetic sort of rabble-rousing it was intended to be to a sort of scathing spell-casting. its heavy, wild, fire-starting. and its only the first go-round, son.

and finally:
my funny friends
i’m not sure what i can say about this joint. it was the last song of the afternoon. and, we sort of let the guard down. at the center of this maelstrom are two motivational ideas: 1. my favorite things (which kyle had been playing solo at the set break right before we pressed record) and 2. just friends… which gets severely distorted here. and becomes something altogether different. great solo by luke at the end of all… i like to call that last section “the dream.” a dream only, yet, five hours old.

***

now i am sitting exhausted in my semi-functional kitchen. with the cats (dolly. dinah. i’m thinking about new names for them. or last names. the Antigone sisters anyone? or is that too much?) all this is in the past now. but the excitement of it remains. i hope it excites you, dear reader. and send you into the same tizzy is sent me.

if not: we’ll keep trying.

til we do,

keep listening.

the working band

oh snap! how long has it been?! too long! and yes, however well intentioned that hiatus may have been, it must be made-up for. and i hope tonight’s post will get us at least partway there. tonight’s post is dedicated to the working band. of late is has been kyle, luke (notary), and myself holding it down sundays in Brooklyn. with only a few gigs under our belt, we have begun to lock-in on all these previously amorphous tunes. give them shape and breath. and bid them live.

and with that said. we’ve had the opportunity to sit down and record some rough drafts of what might constitute the live show. were you to come out to Saje or Brooklyn Exposure on a Sunday afternoon or night, you might get the full brunt of it. as it stands, this is but a taste. still… it is music.

(shhh. originals and current covers.)
